Hello HGCS Parents/Students/Guardians. Welcome to the  ELD page!

ELD stands for English Language Development: Instruction designed specifically for English language learners to develop their academic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. This type of instruction was also known in the past as: English as a Second Language (ESL).

Jambo! I am the HGCS ELD Team Lead for all grade levels. I specifically provide targeted support for 6th-8th grade ELD students to enhance their learning in their education experience. I instruct and support within the and outside the classroom. My goal is for EL students to develop and practice targeted English language skills both academically and beyond the classroom walls. I also wear two other hats here at HGCS: Diversity & Culture Lead and our LGBTQIA+ Club for 7th/8th grades.
I am born and raised in San Diego. I am the mother of one adult son at SDSU majoring in U.S. History and is on track to enter the Air Force officer program with the goal of becoming an Air Force pilot (I'm very proud of him!). I have been in the education field for over 10 years. My education is as follows: BA degree in Early Childhood Education/emphasis in Child Development (Cum Laude grad); MAT (Masters in the Art of Teaching {Magna Cum Laude grad}) Learning in a Global Society (aka Diversity Education) and; Family Services Credential in Social Work. Additionally, I am currently pursuing a TESOL Certificate (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) from University of Arizona. I am VERY excited about this year! Thank you for trusting your children to me. I am grateful.

Asante sana,
Ms. Sheryl, MAT
